    Fatima Al-Suwaidi

    Architect and Project Manager, Ministry of Culture UAE

    Fatima Al-Suwaidi is an architect and project manager at the UAE Ministry of Culture. She has experience in modern heritage with a background in strategy and policy development in the field. She obtained a master’s degree in Conservation Management of Cultural Heritage from the University of Sharjah in the UAE, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from the same institution. She also holds memberships on the Technical Committee for Modern Heritage and the Youth Council of the UAE Society of Engineers. Through her involvement in lectures, panel discussions, and publications, Fatima actively contributes to the advancement of research and knowledge development in her area of expertise.

    Q: When did you know that working in the creative sector was going to be the right fit for you?

    One turning point during my senior year at university was when I attended a talk about modern architectural heritage organised by the UAE Ministry of Culture. I was all alone, I walked into the venue, which was in a villa in Dubai from the 1980s, and it was packed with people I had never met before, seeing high officials and many attendees, I was amazed. I realized these people value our modern heritage, and that day, I decided to be part of the change, and be part of preserving this significant heritage.

    Q: Did you go to university, and if so what did you study?

    Yes, I studied Architectural Engineering in the University of Sharjah and Masters in Conservation Management of Cultural Heritage in the same university.

    Q: What was your first ever job?

    My first job was as an Assistant Project Manager of Heritage and Arts Projects in the Ministry of Culture.

    Q: Do you have any quirky habits that have proved relevant to your work?

    I always keep a small notebook for my to-do list, and prioritize starting with minor tasks, as they have shown to be highly significant in my daily activities.

    Research thoroughly, highlight your skills, and most importantly, be passionate and show your enthusiasm!

    Q: Most underappreciated role in the creative sector?

    The role of conservators, whether in cultural heritage, visual arts, or artifacts is often overlooked. Their careful efforts in preservation and restoration are crucial for maintaining these treasures, without which progress and growth in the creative sector would not be possible.

    Q: Is there one thing you would do differently if you could start your professional career again?

    I would prioritize a more comprehensive understanding of the contemporary creative landscape. This would involve delving into the industry's challenges, opportunities and prevailing frameworks. Such insights would equip me with the necessary tools to effectively shape and approach the projects I undertake, ensuring a more strategic and informed professional journey.

    Q: What other place in the world should the UAE be looking to for inspiration?

    During my recent visits to Changsha and Nanjing in China, I was profoundly inspired by how these cities are promoting their cultural heritage while seamlessly blending it with modern technology and innovation.

    Q: What is the most important next step for the UAE creative industry as a whole?

    The UAE should invest more in education, research, and training to nurture a new generation of creative professionals.
