So You Want to Work in the Arts?
There are so many decisions to make, especially for those soon to leave school, or to recent graduates in the creative arts. Is that you? Perhaps you are an artist, but want to spend some time working for an art organisation. What types of arts organisations are there out there? One factor to consider is the size and style of organisation that would suit you. The UAE has everything from ministerial departments with hundreds of employees, to galleries with two or three permanent members of staff. Do you like working within a formal structure, or are you entrepreneurial at heart and are happiest working on your laptop at home or from a coffee shop plotting your own venture? Are you particularly focused on the visual arts - painting, sculpture, video - or more partial to literature, design, architecture, music, dance? Perhaps you like them all. If you do want to specialise, how do you know if you would be better suited to a role in an education department in a museum or curatorial? What does interpretation and engagement mean in a job title at a museum? Can you work on public programming and publications? How do you begin working in development, or policy? Can research be something you get paid to do? Can you use your expertise in ceramics, or 3D modelling by devising workshops, or by teaching? Perhaps you are a photographer, is this a role that you could be employed to do not just for an events company as a freelancer, but full time? All are valid questions, and there are just so many more.
